Whether you’re in school, or a professional looking for a summer internship, there are a number of organizations that offer these opportunities. If you’re interested in health-related work, you can find positions with NBCU, Global Health Corps, CARE USA, the National Center for Disease Control, and MercyCorps.

WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) internships offer students a great chance to gain practical experience in a professional environment. Students with backgrounds in all academic fields are encouraged to apply. A WHO internship provides insight into the organization’s technical and administrative programs.

There are several types of WHO internships. Incoming interns will work closely with senior management and participate in achieving strategic initiatives. As an intern, you will be responsible for travel and accommodations. During your 10-week internship, you will receive a stipend.

You can apply for the WHO internship program through Stellis, an online recruitment system. This is a free program that offers a wide variety of internship opportunities. After completing the application, you will receive an appointment letter.

You will need to provide a resume, a cover letter, and a brief writing sample describing your interest in the internship. Your application must be submitted by February 3, 2023, at 11:59pm ET.

While the internships are primarily virtual, you may be assigned to work from an NBCU office location. Depending on the type of position, you might need to be in person for certain tasks.

Applicants must have a strong academic record, and demonstrate an interest in health care and civil liberties. The applicant must also have strong research and writing skills. They should be able to demonstrate a strong grasp of at least one of the office languages.

Global Health Corps

Global Health Corps internships offer young professionals the opportunity to gain experience and develop skills to advance health equity worldwide. GHC fellowships are designed to help fellows become leaders and to strengthen organizations that make a measurable impact on the lives of their target populations.

Fellows are placed in a variety of positions throughout the world, and work in teams of two at each placement organization. They have the opportunity to build leadership and organizational skills, and receive training to develop resilience and self-awareness. The curriculum is based on self-care and empathy. It aims to teach young leaders to build community, contribute to the cause, and be resilient and productive in the face of challenges.

Each year, thousands of applicants apply for a GHC fellowship. They come from all over the world, representing 40 nationalities. However, only about a third of the fellows are accepted. Applicants must complete a recommendation form by January 25, 2023.

As part of the program, fellows attend a two-week Training Institute at Yale University. In addition, they have access to mentoring opportunities. These include distance learning opportunities, a professional development fund, and a support network of alumni.

Currently, GHC fellowships are offered in Zambia, Rwanda, Malawi, Uganda, and New York City. Global Health Corps also works with partners in India, Honduras, and other countries.

CDC-Tuskegee University Public Health Ethics Student Internship

Tuskegee University’s National Center for Bioethics in Research and Health Care is the only center dedicated to public health ethics at a historically black college. It sponsors Public Health Ethics Practice Fellowships and Public Health Ethics Internships. The program’s mission is to increase the knowledge of public health ethics and foster ethical public health practice.

Tuskegee’s Public Health Ethics Program focuses on addressing health equity. It promotes ethical public health practice, promotes diversity in public health ethics, and facilitates effective community partnerships. In addition, it offers a scholarship in public health ethics.

Tuskegee University’s Bioethics Center is funded through the U.S. government, and provides training in bioethics and public health ethics. Additionally, the center hosts an annual Presidential Apology Commemoration in Tuskegee, Alabama.

CARE USA

The CARE USA internship program is designed to provide young adults with a meaningful and project-driven work experience. It offers students the opportunity to work on a variety of projects related to global health. During their summers, these interns work with nonprofit and private organizations in the U.S., as well as overseas.
